In a book compiled in 1948 of Kimball County Service personnel, Charles Mark Lanning appeared as a Gold Star Man. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joy Elton Lanning of 18 miles northeast of Kimball. He was a Chief Boilermaker First Class in the Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Minneapolis. He was killed in action near the Solomon Islands November 30, 1942. His body was taken to Hawaii and buried March 26 1943.
