Jasper Columbus Gregory, a well-known farmer and esteemed citizen of Snohomish county, Washington, residing near Machias, was born in Delaware County, New York, December 1, 1834. His parents, Horace G., and Sally (Varnold) Gregory, were for many years residents of the Empire State and were highly res pected for their sterling qualities of mind and heart. They removed to Illinois in 1847, that country being their home for eight years, when they turned their faces toward the setting sun, this time going to Iowa, where they afterward resided.
Jasper was thirteen years of age when his parents removed to Illinois, where he lived until he attained his majority, when he accompanied his parents to Iowa. ...He resided at home until twenty-four years of age, when he went to that part of Iowa which afterward became Cerro Gordo county and which he helped to organize. Here he followed farming ten years, when in 1868, he determined to remove to Minnesota, which was then but little inhabited. Here he helped organize Rock county...and he was for some time Supervisor of his township. He used his homestead rights, securing 100 acres of desirable land, on which he resided for some time. Becoming desirous of visiting the extreme Northeast, he sold his interests in Minnesota, in the fall of 1876, and at once came to Washington. He shortly after preempted eighty acres near Machias which he proceeded to clear and improve and which has been his home ever since.
