The surname is sometimes spelled "Goold" in documents.
No middle name has ever been proven to belong to William.
His birthdate and birthplace were incorrectly documented by early researchers as 1813 and Prince Edward Island, and those errors have been copied by people, BUT further research has determined the date to be 1814 and the place as somewhere in Nova Scotia. He later moved to Prince Edward Island.

The 1860 US census lists his birthplace as Nova Scotia, but there is no field to list the birthplaces of his parents. It lists wife Mary Elizabeth as being born in Prince Edward Island.
The names of his parents are unknown, but the 1880 US Census lists his mother's birthplace as Nova Scotia and the birthplace of his father was left blank.
~~~~~
On 28 Jan 1840 William Gould of Bedeque married Mary Elizabeth Price by license in Prince Edward Island. Witnesses were Wm Anderson, James Walsh and John McCallum. John Craig was the Justice of the Peace.
~~~~~
He moved to Illinois, USA, in 1853 and moved to Iowa in late 1866.
~~~~~
His January 25, 1854 Naturalization Declaration states he was aged forty, born in "Nova Scocia" in British North America, had allegiance to the Queen of England and Ireland, migrated from Prince Edward Island on 3rd day of October, 1853, and arrived in Boston, USA, on or about 21st of October, 1853. No witness names were on the document, other than judge and clerk names, so perhaps this was only the filing record.
Naturalized US citizen May 9, 1860 (index card says witnessed by Alexander Montague and Richard Price --Price likely his brother-in-law -- and also both men were his neighbors in Illinois.)
Obit from South-West Democrat, Bedford, Iowa, Friday, June 8, 1888:
"Died in Bedford, of paralysis, on Sunday the 3d iust. ["inst."? or "last"?], Mr. William Gould, aged 74 years, 3 months and 25 days.
Mr. Gould was born in Nova Scotia, February 8, 1814, moved with his family to Illinois about 35 years ago, and came to Taylor county about 20 years ago. He was the father of ten children, four sons and six daughters. His wife and three sons, George, Alexander and Andrew, survive him and three daughters, Mrs. Edward Parks, of Leland, Illinois, Mrs. D.C. Wilson, of Jewell county, Kansas, and Mrs. E.E. Cass of Bedford.
Mr. Gould for may years resided on his farm about five miles north of Bedford and was counted among the substantial farmers of the county, a man of good judgment and excellent morals. About two years ago he became paralyzed, which so benumbed his senses that he has since required much care and attention. During the last year he has suffered much. His funeral sermon was preached on Monday by Rev. Scott at the Baptist church."
---Daughters Serilda and Seriah A had died in infancy in 1853 and 1855.
Serilda b 08 Nov 1852 Prince Edward Island -d 30 Jan 1853 in either Prince Edward Island or more likely in DeKalb County, Illinois and
Seriah A b 20 Jun 1854 in DeKalb County, Illinois - d 02 Apr 1855 DeKalb County, Illinois.
---Son Alexander -- the obituary for William's wife Mary Elizabeth in 1901 indicated, she was survived by a son "Alexander A. Goold, Pearl, Idaho" among others.
---The burial site and death date for son Andrew is unknown. Son Andrew's first name was William, born 22 Apr 1847 Prince Edward Island. Andrew was selling farm implements in Nebraska in the mid 1870s per letters from William Gould to Alexander Anderson of PEI. And also, it is possible he was living in Alabama in 1934. We know Andrew (or Drew) was living in Mobile, Alabama in 1901 at the time of his mother's death (in whose obit Andrew's name was William A). In 1934 a nephew died in Brewton, Alabama, on a trip where he had gone to search for his uncle.
