Caleb first served in the Civil War and then later served in the U.S. Army full time.

He joined the 1st Delaware Regiment, Company G on May 16, 1861 and served as a Captain. On July 1, 1861 if was promoted within the same unit as Major. He was mustered out of that unit on August 17, 1861 and started his career as a regular officer in the U.S. Army.

He served in the Army in various units until he was placed in retirement in October, 1885 due to disabilities deemed to be in the line of duty.

He was married twice.

His first wife was Mary Hemphill Bush with whom it appears he had no children.

His second wife was Clara Howard Benedict with whom he had four children.
