Andrew's ancestor Jacob Leiter 1670-1728 and wife Regina Hug b1685 came to America around 1727, living in Lancaster Co. (now Lebanon Co.), PA for a time before settling in Washington Co., MD. Jacob's line goes back to Mathias Luetert (Leiter) 1568-1631 and wife Kathrina Wynler 1570-1647 of Switzerland.

Leiter were in the 21st Ohio and all three served from the opening to the close of the war. John P. died about 18 months after his return from disease contracted during his service. Joseph P. Leiter served with the 99th Ohio as a musician.
