72, a resident Of North Chatham, died Nov. 19 at Cape Cod Hospital In Hyannis.

He was the husband Of Barbara (Nickerson) Campbell, who died In 1991.

Born In Fall River, Mr. Campbell moved to Chatham In 1948, where he attended high school.

In 1950 he joined the Army, retiring In 1971 after 21 years Of service. During his military career, he served In combat during the Korean And Vietnam wars.

He was awarded the Silver Star, Legion Of Merit, Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star with Valor Device And two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device And four Oak Leaf Clusters, Korean Campaign with two Battle Stars, Vietnam Service Medal with five Battle Stars And many other campaign medals.

Mr. Campbell served the town Of Chatham as a selectman for many years, retiring In 1982 as chairman Of the board.

He was a member And past master Of St. Martin's Lodge AF&AM Of Chatham, a 32 degree And member Of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley Of Boston, member Of Aleppo Temple Order Of the Mystic Shrine And Cape Cod Shrine Club, member And past vice president Of Highland Light Scottish Society And Chatham Historical Society, member And past commissioner Of New England States for the Clan Campbell Society Of North America, member And past president Of Chapter 007 Reserve Officers Association, life member Of Brown-James-Buck Post Veterans Of Foreign Wars, the Disabled Veterans Association And Post 253 American Legion Of Chatham.

Survivors include his companion, Janet R. Eldredge Of North Chatham; four sons, Thorne W. Campbell III Of Skowegan, Maine, Wayne A. Campbell Of Brandon, Fla., Bruce A. Campbell Of Harwich Port And William F. Campbell Of Edgartown; a daughter, Nancy J. Bentley Of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Caroline A. Johnson Of DeBary, Fla.; a brother, Donald G. Campbell Of Vermont; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; And many nieces And nephews.

He was also the father Of Scott D. Campbell, who died In 2001.

The funeral And burial are private.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the United Methodist Church In Chatham.
