History of Captain Matthew Dill 1698 - 1750
Captain Matthew Dill was one of the first settlers in the vicinity of th present town of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. He was of Scottish-Irish ancestry. During the troubles immediate before the French and Indian war, he was one of the five commissioners, one of whom was Benjamin Franklin, appointed to make a treaty with the Indians at the Croghan Fort, which was located near the Susquehanna river, in the lower end of Cumberland county. He afterward took part in the French and Indian war. In 1749 he was one of the eight Justices of the Peace and Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of York county. He died before the revolution.
His remains, together with those of many of his descendants lie in a graveyard a few hundred yards west of Dillsburg, York county PA. His son (Colonel) Matthew Dill "the younger" 1726 - 1812 served in the military as well as in political offices.
