Obituary for Christ Sydow:

Christian Frederick Sydow, born at Lomira, Wisconsin on April 12, 1851 departed from this life early Tuesday morning December 24th at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 12 days.

As a young man at the age of 17 years he moved from Wisconsin to Minnesota and located at St. Charles.

On November 3rd, 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Augusta Schmidt. To this union seven children were born. In the year 1897 while living at Odessa, he suffered the loss through death of his faithful wife and companion. In the year 1898 he was married to Miss Clara Goettel. To this marriage six children were born.

The deceased was a resident of this state for 67 years and lived in the city of Blue Earth with his family since 1922, where he and his family became members of the Salem Evangelical church of this city.

He is survived in his death by one sister, Mrs. Minnie Zimmerman of Aberdeen, S. D., his sorrowing wife, and ten children: Mrs. William Smith of Madison, Minn., Mrs. H. Haueter of San Diego, California; Miss Ella Sydow of Blue Earth, Ben Sydow of Kerrick, Minn., Mrs. Adeline Beyer of Bricelyn, Minn., Mrs. Esther Scrabeck of Walters; Mrs. Ethel Sahr of Bricelyn, Minn.; Mrs. Viola Courrier of Walters; and Nathan and Lawrence of this city.

The deceased was born on devout Evangelical parentage and early in life yielded his life to God and became a member of the Evangelical church. As a young man he became conscious of a deep sense of call to preach the Gospel. He answered this call to the ministry by applying to the Minnesota Conference of the Evangelical Church for a license to preach in the year 1874. The license to preach was granted and two years later he received his ordination to the order of a deacon and was voted into the itinerancy. With the exception of two years, he served faithfully in the ministry of the Evangelical church in this State until the year 1922, a period of 46 years. During this period he was pastor in charge of the following congregations and churches: Carver, Fergus Falls, New Auburn, Hutchinson, Paynesville, Brainerd, Alexandria, Crow River, Odessa, Maple Grove, Pipestone, Redwood, Rice Lake, Kenyon and Preston.

During his ministry he experienced all the hardships and privations common to the work of the early pioneer minister. It can be said of him that he was a faithful preacher of the Word of God. Throughout his ministry he was concerned with but one thing, namely that through his life and preaching, Christ might be exalted and lifted up. His fine Christian character commanded the respect of clergy and laity alike. The many Christian virtues and graces with which he adorned his life have been and will continue to be a challenge to all who knew him.

His helpfulness did not cease when he retired from the ranks of the active ministers of the Minnesota Conference and became a member of the Salem Evangelical church of this city. He has been a constant blessing and inspiration to this congregation during his years as a retired minister. During these years he continued to be a faithful and appreciative attendant at the services of worship. He continued his study of the Word of God as a member of one of the Bible Classes of our congregation. He was among the most faithful in attendance at the Wednesday evening Prayer Service.

Surely it can be said of this soldier of the cross that he kept the faith, that he fought a good fight and that he has finished his course.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday afternoon of this week in the Salem Evangelical Church. The pastor Rev. H. E. Hiller, will be assisted by Rev. H. E. Mueller, District Superintendent of the St. Paul District of the Minnesota Conference. Burial will be made at Riverside Cemetery.

Per Diane Kahl's email regarding discussion with Hope Sydow on February 18, 2000:

When Christian and Clara Sydow retired in 1922, they moved into an old house just to the east of 321 E. 5th Street (Anna's house then and Hope's now) Hope stated the the house Christian and Clara lived in was very old and that it is no longer there. The site of their home, has been replaced with a new parsonage.
