Stricken On Street, Veteran Rail Veteran Dies.

William W. Fair, veteran Reading Company shop worker and former boatman on the old Schuylkill Canal, was stricken on the street Tuesday afternoon and died before reaching a hospital. He was aged 87 years.

Mr. Fair, whose home is at 819 North Fourth Street was walking along Oley Street near Sixth when stricken. He fell to the sidewalk. Residents of the neighborhood ran to his assistance, called an ambulance and he was taken to the homeopathic Hospital where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Warren Trexler.

Mr. Fair was born in Exeter Township near the Black Bear Hotel son of the late Reuben D. and Harriet D. Feather Fair. When a boy of 12 he entered the employ of Capt. Caleb Ruth of Gibraltar, who commanded a canal boat group on the Schuylkill Canal. He went through a number of dangerous experiences during his career on the canal. He was in this work for five years and then learned forging at Spring Grove, Lancaster County. Later he engaged in farming near Honey Brook, Chester County.

Some years later he came to Reading and entered the Reading Company shops as a helper in the tool department and later was engaged in dressing and tempering tools. He was placed on the railroad pension list in 1915.

Mr. Fair was member of St., Mathew's Lutheran Church for 49 years and never missed communion during that time. He was a member of the P & R Relief Association; Camp 329 of the P.O.S. and A (Patriotic Order of Sons of America) and Muhlenberg Lodge No. 1085 Odd Fellows.

He is survived by his widow Catherine C. (Bowman) Fair; two sons, William W. B. and Charles R. Fair both of Reading; one grandson William K. Fair and one brother, George E. Fair of Reading also a railroad veteran and former instructor of rules with the Reading Company.

Funeral Director T. C. Auman is in charge. Rev. W. R. Siegart will conduct services Friday at 2 PM at the house, followed by internment in the Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading.
