Bessie was just three when her father, Levi Burton died in 1893. She was reared in Hartville, Wright County, Missouri, by a very protective mother. When engaged to Elmer Turner, they made plans for her to travel to Montana to be married. Mother Amanda would not allow her to make the train journey by herself -- "nice young women don't travel by themselves," and Amanda was unable to accompany her. Bessie's brother Joseph Jasper Burton (J.J.) made the trip with Bessie.
Bessie and Elmer Turner were in California by 1913. Four Burton siblings – children of Levi Burton and Amanda Smith Burton – moved their families to Fresno early 1920s. Sisters Fidella Burton Maddy, Bessie Burton Turner, arrived first, soon followed by brothers William Elsberry Burton and Joseph Jasper Burton.
Bessie might be described as chic. She was a serious clotheshorse, dressed far more zippily than her sister and sisters-in-law. Her niece, Verba Burton Smith, daughter of J.J., often commented when putting together an outfit for herself that she "was sure Aunt Bessie would have loved it."
