Feb 1998: Ira E. Shumate Jr., 67, died Jan. 23, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital, Kirkwood, Missouri, following a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Ira E. Sr. and Okie Hurley Shumate, and he had resided in the St. Augustine area since 1969, moving to Kirkwood last year. He came to St. Augustine from Quarryville, Pennsylvania, where he was a semi-driver, driving for Hastings Trucking, Herr's Motor Express and L.M. Prange. He was an owner/operator at the time of his retirement. Memorial services were held Jan. 31 at Reynolds Funeral Home, Quarryville. Survivors include two sons, four daughters; three sisters; one brother; nine grandchildren and other relatives. (St. Augustine's Record)
