Hobbs Resident Is Shot To Death

HOBBS, N.M. (Special) - Bulldozer operator Jose Urios Grado, 37, was charged with murder Saturday, a few hours after Norman John Baugh, 42, was shot to death with a .45 caliber automatic pistol.

Grado surrendered to police a short time after the slaying and told investigators the shooting followed earlier trouble between himself and Baugh.

Baugh was a toolpusher for Younger Construction Company of Hobbs, where Grado also was employed.

The slaying occurred Saturday morning at the firm's small office building about one and one-half miles south of Hobbs.

Investigators said Grado told them he had been struck twice by Baugh on Thursday, and that Baugh said, "People like you I kill and put on the dump ground."

Grado insisted he had wanted no trouble with Baugh and had offered to quit his job, but that the firms superintendent wouldn't permit him to resign.

The superintendent, J.L. (Red) Perry, said six persons were in the office Saturday morning when Grado drove up and called for Baugh to come outside. Then Perry said, the persons inside "heard three shots fairly close together."

Perry said Baugh "Stumbled in the front door and fell on the floor."

Grado got back in his car and drove away, investigators said, and was arrested without resistance at his home in Hobbs.

Grado said Baugh told him immediately before the shooting that "he was going to run me off."

Grado said that at that time he went to the car, got his gun and fired twice. Baugh turned and ran, he said, before the third shot was fired.

Baugh was struck once in the right leg, once in the shoulder and once in the back.

Grado was ordered held in the county jail at Lovington, N.M., without bond, until a preliminary hearing is held next Thursday.

Survivors of Baugh include his widow and four children, Alton, Hershel, Don, and Norma Lee; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Baugh of Snyder; two brothers and four sisters.

Services are pending at the Roberts Funeral Home in Hobbs.
