Orphaned barely a month after his birth, he was raised by his grandparents, the Taylor Hulens. He married Margaret Ann Allnut September 21, 1865 in Clinton County, Missouri. They had ten children: Cintha [Cynthia?] Ann (Asbury) Ditmars, Huldah (Asbury) Walker, Virginia "Jennie" (Asbury) Piercy, George L. Asbury, Harrison Taylor Asbury, Elizabeth Margaret "Lizzie" (Asbury) Roberts, Joseph W. Asbury, William Butler Asbury, Elmer Roscoe Asbury, and Henry E. Asbury.
