Mrs. Constant Cichy who died July 31st at her home in Millerville was born in New Munich, Minn., March 2, 1847. Her husband Constant Cichy passed away on January 16 at the age of 99 years, 3 months and 27 days. Mrs. Cichy was ill only a few days before her death.
Mrs. Cichy was 17 years of age when she came to Douglas county, and lived 77 years in the county. Mr. and Mrs. Cichy lived in a shanty with a straw roof for about nine years, when they built their second house of logs, which he hauled and squared himself. They lived in this place about 30 years and in 1904 he built a frame house, which place was their home until their death. Their first harvesting was done with the cradle. The nearest town was Alexandria where they did their trading; but if they wished to receive cash for their grain, they went by oxen train to Perham or Wadena, which took approximately three days for the round trip. On these trips they often stopped at Indian camps and whatever food supplies he had over, they would give to the Indians, which they appreciated very much. Mr. Cichy and his brother-in-law did a lot of ox trading and used to walk to St. Cloud.
Catherine Peffer was united in marriage to Constant Cichy and to them fourteen children were born (8 girls and 6 boys). Three children have preceded their mother in death: Abaline (Mrs. Jess Merill) passed away at Thief River Falls, twenty years ago; Anton met death accidentally while operating a threshing engine ten years ago; Barbara passing away in infancy. The surviving children are: Mary (Mrs. Fred Link, of Menomonie, Wis.; Steve of Ortonville; Annie (Mrs. J. C. Meyett) of Superior, Wis.; Rose (Mrs. F. A. Johnson) of Bay City, Wis.; Tillie (Mrs. J. Murphy) of Seattle; Lucy (Mrs. C. A. Johnson) of Waukegan, Ill.; Agnes (Mrs. John Kuick) of West Hope, N.D.; Joe of Evansville, August of Kent and Wm. and Frank at home. Surviving also are 24 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Henry Peffer) of Wadena; Mrs. Theo. Brockop of Wadena and one brother, Anton of St. Cloud also survive.
Mrs. Cichy was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic church of Millerville and belonged to the Christian Mother's organization. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 8:30 at the residence and 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church in Millerville; Father Wilkes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Klein, John K. Klimek, Charles Debilzen, Herbert Roers, Joe Roers and August Roers. Anton Koeplin was cross bearer.
