WALTER ARTIE "DOC" SCARBOROUGH, 100, passed away June 4, 2009. Doc often said, "Why do you think the Lord has left me here on earth so long?" His family and friends would reply, "Doc, it's because you are an inspiration to everyone!" On his 100th birthday, Doc did not have any words of wisdom or explanation of why he had lived so long. He would simply say "the Lord has a reason for everything; I don't question it. I just let the Lord steer the boat."

On August 12, 1908, Doc was born in Kosse, Texas, to Mattie Elizabeth O'Neal and Ceburn Lewis Scarborough. At the age of eight, he and his family made the trip to Houston, by way of Humble, in a covered wagon. Whenever they crossed a creek, the family would stop and spend the night. It was Doc's job to help unharness the mules. Then the kids would hang around the camp while his grandfather would hunt for rabbits and squirrels for their dinner.

After several jobs around Houston, in 1935 he began his career with the U. S. Post Office. He retired in 1977 as the Superintendent of Building Maintenance. He met the love of his life, Laura Lucile Jobes and they were married August 2, 1936. They shared love and life for 68 wonderful years. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army, serving 3 years in the 335th Fighter Squadron Group and was awarded the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart.

Doc loved people and volunteered his time in many organizations. He was a member of Woodland Masonic Lodge #1157 for 28 years. In 1986-87 he served as their Worshipful Master and was the recipient of the Golden Trowel. He was an Eastern Star, a greeter at Scottish Rite and a member of York Wright. Doc was also a Shiner and in the Past Master's Club. In 1978, he joined the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 828, and became president of the local chapter and Area VP of South Texas. He received the Kiwanis George F. Hixson Humanitarian Award in 1998.

The loving family Doc leaves behind is his daughters Becky Neisig and her husband Pete, Liz Scarborough and her husband Nelson Messinger. Granddaughters Becky Roth, husband Dan and Linda Cole, husband Peter. Step-grandchildren are Mark Neisig, Jake Messinger, and Melissa Miller. Great grandchildren: Rebecca Roth Maddoux, husband Blake, Rachel Roth Croy, husband Matt, Samantha Roth, Carter Cole, Mitchell Cole. Step-great grandchildren Colin and Grace Messinger. Great-great grandson Seth Cole. Nieces and nephews include Cynthia DeBoe Brown, Jake DeBoe, Jr., Harriett Hart, Mary Jane Perpich, Jeanette Perpich Catlow, Pete Perpich, Patti Perpich McClosky and Dillie Kay Perpich.

Doc was preceded in death by his wife Lucile, parents, brothers Henry and Lewis Scarborough, Jr., Cannon and Sandlin Hall, sisters Louise Scarborough DeBoe, Grace Hall Schropshire and Leona Hall Miller.

Friends are invited to visit the family on Monday, June 8, 2009, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
