Cecil A. Swayze, 85, died peacefully Sunday morning, May 31, 2009 in Mitchell.

Born April 16, 1924, in Lawrencevlle, Ill., he was the son of Isreal and Icie (Lukens) Swayze. He married Kathryn Richardson in 1941.

Mr. Swayze moved to Mitchell in 1960 to work for Mitchell Transport as a mechanic. He retired in 1988 from General Motors in Bedford as a welder.

He joined the U.S. Army in May of 1944 and earned a Silver Star medal during service with the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre. He was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant in November 1945. He joined the Indiana National Guard in 1948, and retired as a captain in 1962.

He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion of Mitchell, and attended the Mitchell Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Kathryn of Mitchell; three sons, Don Swayze of Mitchell, Richard Swayze of Texas, and Steve Swayze of Arizona; one daughter, Cecilia Kay Swayze-Wright of Michigan; eight grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norma Wagonseller of Lawrenceville, Ill.

His parents preceded him in death, along with two sisters; one brother; and one granddaughter, Joni.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memorial Gardens with military services.
