Army Maj. Barnes was a member of the Tactical Command Post, 40th Infantry Division, California Army National Guard, assigned as an individual augmentee to the 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. He died in Bagram, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained during a vehicle roll-over. As a young man, Rocco worked in the coal mines. He then moved to Florida and enlisted in the Army Delayed Entry Program on 20 January 1978. In April 1981, he transferred to the Army Reserve and on 6 February 1982, he enlisted in the Florida Army National Guard. Rocco then got into security work and was the bodyguard for Arnold Schwarzenegger on the sets of "True Lies" and "Collateral Damage". He was head of West Coast operations for the security company Vance International before beginning his career in entertainment. Rocco was chief operating officer for Fishman Productions, Ltd, an entertainment company located at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, California. He wrote the screenplay for an action film called "Trajectory," which is to go into production next year. He had a passion for both the military and the movie business but he was a true, blue, old-fashioned soldier who served for love of country. Rocco served as the Commander of the U.S. Army Special Forces HALO Detachment. He had completed the Special Forces Medical Sergeant Course, Special Forces Detachment Officer Course, Air Assault School, Army Airborne School, Officer Candidate School, Military Free Fall Parachutist Course, Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Combined Staff Service Support School, Infantry Officers Basic Course and has received the Bronze Star (2nd Award), Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global war on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with "M" Device), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3rd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, California Medal of Merit, Special Forces Tab, Parachute Badge and Air Assault Badge. He had served two tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan. Rocco was a modest and private man who never talked about all the great things he had done.
