George's obituary noted that he was "among the oldest pioneers of the county" (LaCrosse Co., WI) and was "a well-to-do farmer and a highly respected citizen."

His wife was Elizabeth Miller and their children were: Emmanuel, Jacob Charles "J.C.", Simon Peter; Catharine Ann; George Washington; Rachel Jane; John; Naomi and Ellanora. Naomi and Ellanora were twins.

Rachel Jane was born 12/3/1848 and died 5/26/1850 in Parke Co., IN. Ellanora was born 9/25/1853, LaCrosse, WI and died 3/30/1878 St. Louis, MO and was married to C. Bernet.

George was buried in the Markle Cemetery at the Markle Homestead. This cemetery is now called Salzer Methodist Memorial Church Cemetery.

Mr. George Markle of Mormon Coolie Stricken Down While Walking Along the Road

Mr. George Markle, whille on his way with his son John to the auction at Zopfi's place, in the town of Shelby, yesterday at about 10 o'clock, and when within a quarter of mile of the place was suddenly taken sick and died in a few minutes. He has been troubled with heart disease for some time past, but was feeling well when he left home. Mr. Markle was about seventy-five years of age, and was hale and hearty for his years. He is among the oldest pioneers on the county. Mr. Markle was a well-to-do farmer and highly respected citizen.

Mr. George Markle, of the town of Shelby, died suddenly of heart disease last Friday. He was on his way to attend an auction at a neighbor's when stricken down. Mr. Markle was seventy-five years of age and was one of the oldest settlers in Mormon Cooley, where he has succeeded in making a nice home. He was highly respected in the community where he lived and the family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
