William was one of three children to James and Jane White Boggs. His sisters were Mary Jane and Martha Boggs. William was born on Alleghany Mt. Greenbrier County Va. now West Virginia near the present state line. The old farm on the mountain is still known as the old Boggs place. He married Sarah P. Pyles of Pocahontas, County WVa and together they had 5 children. When the civil war came, he like many others from the Anthony's Creek District, answered Virginias call for volunteers and joined company E 26TH Battalion Va. Inf. on March 24, 1862 in Lewisburg, Va. He would be in many battles including The Battle of Lewisburg in May 1862, The Kanawha Valley Campaign, Fayette Court House, Tuckwillar Hill (west of Lewisburg) Battle of Dry Creek, Droop Mt. The Battle of New Market, Totopotomoy Creek, along the Chickahominy at Taylor's and Gardner's farms and on June 2nd & 3rd 1864 on the battle line at Cold Harbor, near Richmond. Here the battalion would be briefly overrun on the morning of June 3, and many confederate prisoners would be taken including William Boggs. He would eventually make his way to Elmira POW camp in N.Y. by train and on July 15,1864 would be involved in train wreck at Shohola Pa. where many prisoners were killed but he suffered a broken leg. He would be later moved to Elmira where, due to terriable living conditions, he would die on December 19, 1864. He would leave behind his young wife, four sons and a daughter.
