Bryn was Mayor of Superior, Wisconsin from 1935 to 1941. Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway visited Superior while he was Mayor. In 1939 he was Knighted by King Haakon of Norway. Bryn moved to Duluth, Minnesota and was appointed Vice Consul for Norway with several northern counties of Minnesota under his jurisdiction.

Father was Johan Carlson Ostby who died in Norway on June 26, 1904
