Vice Consul Mrs. Bryn Ostby Succumbs at 77

Mrs. Bryn Ostby, 77, Norwegian vice consul in Duluth, died unexpectedly Wednesday in Springfield, Va., where she was visiting her son John Ostby, a colonel in the Marine Corps. She resided at 1915 Lakeview Drive. Mrs. Ostby had served as vice consul since 1958 when a certificate of recognition was issued to her by Christian Herter, then U.S. secretary of state.
Prior to her permanent appointment, she served as acting vice consul following her husband's death in 1954. The late Mr. Ostby, a former mayor of Superior, had held the vice consul post for about six years at the time of his death. Mrs. Ostby had actively assisted him in his work.
Since assuming her official post, she had been active in Norwegian affairs throughout the area, serving as hostess for visiting Norwegian dignitaries, participating in Norwegian observances and programs, as well as fulfilling the duties of her post.
In May 1963, Mrs. Ostby was presented with the Knight's Cross of the Royal Order of St. Olaf, one of Norway's highest civilian honors.
The medal, given in the name of King Olav, was presented to her by Axel I.L. Moltke-Hansen, Minneapolis, consul general for Norway for the Upper Midwest, in recognition for her "long and faithful" service.
Mrs. Ostby's husband received the same medal about 26 years ago when he was mayor of Superior. His award was given in the name of the late King Haakon.
Mrs. Ostby had been a member of the First Lutheran Church of Duluth for the past nine years. Prior to joining the Duluth church, she had been a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Superior where she had served as organist for about 40 years.
She was president of the Aftenro Society. Among the other organizations she belonged to was the Soroptimet Club.
Mrs. Ostby was born in Ishpeming, Mich, of Norwegian immigrants.
Surviving in addition to her son, John, are a son, Byron, Madison, Wis.; two brothers, Arnold Lerann, Duluth; and Dr. Luther Lerann, Sioux Falls, S.D.; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Morstad, Denver, Colo; Mrs. Gudrun Thurwachter, Waukesha, Wis., and Mrs. Borghild Boraas, River Falls, Wis., and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services have been tentatively set for 1 p.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Duluth. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Superior.
