Frances L. O'Meara

Sister to Polly O'Meara Doyle, wife of the president of the Exchange Bank and co-namesake of the Frank Doyle & Polly O'Meara Doyle Scholarship at SRJC.

In June 1890, Frances applied for a teaching job in Sana Rosa.

September 1893 real estate transfer: Estate of John Good, deceased, to Frances L. O'Meara lot southeast comer College avenue and Mendocino street, Santa Rosa; $8,000

In February 1894, Miss O'Meara's list of students being promoted out of her first grade class was printed in the Sonoma Democrat.

In December 1896, at the State Teachers' Convention, "Miss Frances O'Meara will read a paper on "Co-relation of the Myths and Literature with the History of Greece;''"

In May, 1897, at a meeting, Miss Frances O'Meara then rose to say that the great point in common sense teaching is for the teacher to know what he is doing and why he is doing it This sentiment, so concisely put, received a spirited round of applause."

Miss O'Meara was listed as an instructor at Santa Rosa High School for the school year beginning September 1897.

Private Service Held Today for Frances O'Meara
Private funeral services for Miss Frances L. O'Meara, pioneer Santa Rosa educator, were held this morning from the chapel at Welti Funeral Parlors with the Rev. W. S. Short, and Dean Egbert B. Clark, Jr., officiating.

Interment followed in the family plot in Rural cemetery.
Pallbearers included Sperior Judge Donald geary, W. Finlaw Geary, John Overton, Ralph Williams and Walter Frei.

Miss O'Meara died at a Santa Rosa hospital Saturday night. She suffered a severe attack of pneumonia a week ago and was removed to the hospital.

Messages of sympathy were received by members of the family from all parts of the nation. One was received from Robert L. Ripley creator of "Believe It or Not." His message was: "The death of my teacher, Frances O'Meara, leaves me with a feeling of intense personal loss. She profoundly influenced my life as she did my mother and my brother, Douglas, as well as thousands of Santa Rosa students during her half-century of teaching. Her memory is an inspiration for understanding went far beyond text books and rote. Her teachings will be cherished throughout my life."

Miss O'Meara is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Frank P. Doyle and Mrs. Julia Jordan and a brother, James O'Meara all of Santa Rosa. She retired from the high school faculty here last year after having taught in Santa Rosa schools for the past 50 years.

Favorite teacher of Robert Ripley who went on to fame with Ripley's Believe It or Not. He buried in the adjacent Santa Rosa Odd Fellows Cemetery.
