Nan Reiko Watanabe Lewis 44, of Indianapolis, died on Friday, May 1, 2009. She was born on August 19, 1964, in Indianapolis, to August and Margaret Watanabe. She was recovering from recent elective surgery, and died of a massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage presumably related to a stress ulcer in her GI tract. She attended Park Tudor and North Central high schools; Indiana University, where she achieved a greater than 4.0 grade point average; and Harvard Law School. She was employed by the Marion County Prosecutors Office and the Marion County Public Defenders Office before defining herself as a "recovering lawyer." She went on to become a beloved mother, an inventor, and—during the last year of her life—a writer of romance novels. She loved her daughters, animals of all kinds, Nirvana, Hole, Nine Inch Nails, the Beatles, Star Trek, Lost, David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs, Steven Wright, science fiction, mystery novels, and true crime documentaries. She is survived by her husband, Gregory L. Lewis, and daughters, Kiara and Rhiannon; her parents; her grandmother, Mary Watanabe, all of Indianapolis, and her brothers Frank of Ventura, California and Scott of Sarasota, Florida. Kiara and Rhiannon also want everyone to know that their mother was really pretty and died happy and without pain. They love her and will miss her very much. Private funeral services will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery on May 6. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making memorial donations to The Orchard School, 615 West 64th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260; Fox Hill Dance Foundation, 2275 Fox Hill Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46228, or FACE low-cost spayneuter Clinic, 1505 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46201.
