William J. Mertens, 78, former Two Rivers milk dealer, died early Monday night at Manitowoc County Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services held Thursday at Deja and Martin Funeral Chapels and at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. John K.

Mr. Mertens was born July 16, 1886, at Two Rivers, son of the late William and Catherine Smith Mertens. He attended Two Rivers schools and in 1920 took over the operation of the former Farmers’ Dairy and distributed the first pasteurized milk in the Two Rivers area in 1922. He disposed of the business which later became the Two Rivers Dairy on 18th Street, east side, now the Verifine Ice Cream and Dairy Co. In 1928, he became a machine operator in the wood plant of Hamilton Mfg. Co., Two Rivers, retiring in 1952.
Mr. Mertens married the former Clara Nischke at Two Rivers, April 12, 1909. The couple celebrated its golden wedding anniversary in 1959. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Holy Name Society and the 20-Year Club of Hamilton Mfg. Co.
Besides his wife he leaves five daughters, Mrs. William Kaiser, Mrs. Edward Klabunde and Mrs. Allan Gauthier of Manitowoc, Mrs. Robert Bacca of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Wilfred Brocher of Two Rivers; a son, Al of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Wacek of Two Rivers; 25 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
