Born in Bavaria, Germany, Michael learned the carpentry trade in Germany. In 1852, he came to America on a 23-day journey aboard a sailing vessel on rough seas. He first settled in Reading, Pennsylvania. There he met and married Abbie Schnetzer, also a Bavarian native. In the 1870s, they came to White County and settled in Brookston. After several years, they moved to Monticello. He owned a retail lumber business and later an undertaking business.

The earliest Biederwolf known is Johann Heinrich Biederwolf, who married Anna Maria Rapp. They were the parents of sixteen children (of whom 13 survived birth) including: Michael, Philip Peter, Maria Magdelena, Maria Louisa, Elizabetha, Franz, Georg Heinrich, and Catharina Carolina. The son Michael was christened on 21 Jun 1832 at Evangelisch, Kandel, Pfatz, Bayern, Germany; son of Johann Heinrich Beiderwolf and Anna Maria Rapp. It is believed that Johann Heinrich Beiderwolf also came to the United States.
