Barre, Vermont - January 13, 2011

Barre residents just received a big surprise thanks to a local businessman who died two years ago.

Ronald York was killed when his helicopter crashed in Berlin in June of 2009. In his will he left a total of $7 million to five community organizations. That money will go to the Barre Youth Sports Association, the Barre Senior Center, the Vermont Historical Society and the Aldrich Public Library.

The biggest chunk, $3.5 million, will create a new fund that gives scholarships to college-bound students from Spaulding High School, which is York's alma mater.

York owned and operated Bates and Murray Electrical Contractors until he retired in 2005. He's not the only Barre businessman to leave love for the community in his will; Charles Semprebon recently left the city over $2 million.
