Obituary of Mrs. Bogardus published in the Portland Observer, 4 Mar 1898:
Good Woman Gone.
Mrs. James. L. Bogardus Passed to Her Reward Last Sunday Evening.
Sallie, wife of James L. Bogardus, died at her home in this township west of town on Sunday evening last as the result of a congestive chill, having been sick but a short time.
Sallie J. Hubble was born in Williams county, Ohio, July 9, 1849, and in the fall of that year her parents removed to Carlton, Barry county, Mich., where she resided 28 years.
She was married to J. L. Bogardus Jan, 8th, 1874. The family has resided in Portland more than 20 years. Besides a husband she leaves, to mourn her loss, three sons and two daughters; also a half-brother, Charles L.Smith of Carlton.
She united with the Baptist church of Portland Feb. 19, 1895, but previous to that she had, according to those who knew her best, led a most exemplary life as loving and devoted wife and mother and kind neighbor. After uniting with the church she was, as her pastor says, "Consistent in those things which go to make a thorough Christian – faithful and reliable at all times and devoted to the
cause which she had espoused."
The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon.
