US Congressman. He served as a member of the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1977 until January 3, 1993, representing Michigan's 2nd Congressional District. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, he served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959 before entering politics. He served as a member of the Michigan State Senate from 1970 until his election to the US House in 1977. He was a member of the House Appropriations Committee, and the highest ranking Republican to serve on the House Education Subcommittee. During his tenure in the House, he was a vocal critic of Ronald Reagan's proposed Star Wars initiative, and was opposed to the presidents attempts to cut funds for social programs. He was a member of the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents from 1993 to 2000, and was named to the university's College of Education Alumni Hall of Fame.
