Son of Martha Frances "Fannie" Britton from Hertford County NC and James Edward Matthews from Virginia. Uncle Bill was the fifth child and second son of eight children. The name he was known by varies from Clyde to Willie to William to Bill during his life.

By 1900, the family had relocated to Mitchells in Bertie County NC and he was Clyde on census records. He was working as a laborer on his family's farm. In 1908, he married Nora Early (*see below) at the home of Andrew Jackson Early in Mitchells, Bertie County. He was Clyde in the 1910 census. In 1918, he signed his name Willie Clyde Matthews on his WWI draft registration and he was working as a merchant. By 1920, Willie Clyde was a traveling salesman for a wholesale grocery company. He and Nora were living in Ahoskie, Hertford County. They had no children and eventually divorced.

In 1931 at age 50, he was William Clyde Matthews at his marriage to 29-year old school teacher Martha Ventress McLeod from Buie, Robeson County NC. My aunt Martha always called him Bill. After their marriage, they moved to Charlotte where Bill owned and operated a retail furniture store known as Johnston Furniture Store.

Uncle Bill was a very quiet man who let his wife Martha do all the talking. They lived on the outskirts (at that time) of town on a corner lot at 3600 Shamrock Drive. They also owned an adjacent lot on which was planted a large vegetable garden. They never had children of their own but were always interested in the lives of their nieces and nephews. A visit to their home was special with its dainty nic-nacs and white bedspreads. Martha would cook a Southern feast and it would be served on fancy dinnerware. Their house was always bright and airy.

Martha's dear Bill passed away at age 92 after a three-week bout with pneumonia.

* Nora Early is seen as Nora J. Early, Nora Jane Early, Nora E. Early, Nora Elizabeth Early and Nora Early. In records associated with her parents she has middle name Jane. In records associated with her first husband, she has middle name Elizabeth.

William Clyde Matthews married 'Nora E. Early' at the home of Andrew Jackson Early who is shown as the father of 'Nora J. Early' in the 1900 census and on the delayed NC birth record of 'Nora Jane Early'. In records with Nora's 2nd husband, she is seen as Nora Early, with no middle initial/name.

It appears to this researcher that, either W. C. Matthews thought Nora's middle name was Elizabeth, or she had a double middle name, i.e., Jane Elizabeth.
