Martha attended school at Philadelphus School near Buie and later graduated from North Carolina College for Women in Greensboro NC. She became a school teacher at the Rowland School. The 1930 US Federal Census shows her as a boarder in the household of the large Stuart (sic) family in Gaddy, Robeson County, which is near Rowland. She was working as a public school teacher. Maps of the era show a Stewart Crossroads between the towns of Rowland and Gaddysville.
When she married in 1931 at age 29, Martha moved to Charlotte with her husband, William Clyde Matthews. They purchased a home at 3600 Shamrock Drive, which at that time was on the outskirts of town. They also owned an adjoining lot where Martha maintained a large vegetable garden. In his later years, Bill was owner of the Johnston Furniture Store. They had no children.
Martha appears to have been named after her mother's younger sister, Martha Ventress "Pattie" Manning, who lived with the family prior to her own marriage in 1902.
