He was born on July 17, 1943, to Forest R. and Thelma L. (Redington) Cobb. He married Isabel (Moreno) Cobb on Nov. 22, 1974, and she died June 16, 2002.
He joined the US Marine Corps in 1960 and served 30 years before retiring in 1990 as Sergeant Major. He served honorably at all his duty stations which included Concord and San Diego, Calif., Iwakuni, Japan, Camp Lejeune, N.C., USS Springfield, Republic of Vietnam, Camp Pendleton, Calif., USS Constellation and Tallahassee, Fla. He was promoted to Sergeant Major in June 1982 and served as Sgt Maj. of Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465, 11th Marine Amphibious unit, 11th Marine Regiment, and the 4th Marine Division.
His awards and decorations include the US Navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with eight awards, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Overseas Deployment Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallontry with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Civic Action Medal with Palm, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After retiring from the USMC, he served as Lieutenant Colonel at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in New Orleans, La., for 12 years before retiring. He was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League, VFW, Fleet Reserve Association, American Legion, and the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by one sister, Glenda M. Sheets, Avon; a sister-in-law, Dora M. Cobb, Frankfort; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Phillip R. Cobb.
Services were held in Baton Rouge, La., and his final resting place will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
