---Rachel S. Strait was born May 17, 1838, in Piccaway[stet] County, Ohio, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary M. Snethen, of Grant City, Missouri, April 24, 1925, aged 86 years, 11 months and 7 days.
---She was married to John Strait in 1858, who died February 2, 1914. To this union were born eleven children, six of whom preceded their mother in death. She spent most of her life near Brooks, Iowa. Eleven years ago she located in Grant City, where she made her home with her daughter every since.
---Early in life she was converted to the christian life, publicly acknowledged her Saviour, and united with the United Brethren Church in Iowa, where she lived on the farm. She remained a faithful member until the end. Grandma Strait was an excellent character, and being confined to the home on account of her infirmities she did not forget to let her light shine for Him whom she loved and trusted as her Saviour. Often she spoke of the city beyond and her prayers constantly ascended to her Heavenly Father to remove her to the house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
---In the early morning of April 24th she sank into a peaceful sleep, and then bade farewell to her two daughters, Mrs. Snethen and Mrs. James, who were at the bedside when the end came. She was a loving mother, an affectionate wife, and a good neighbor.
---She leaves to mourn her departure five children: William Strait, Alvin, Texas; Mrs. Sarah James, Pond Creek, Oklahoma; John Strait, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada; Barney D. Strait, Forsyth, Montana; Mrs. Mary M. Snethen, Grant City, Missouri; also 27 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, besides other relatives, as well as a large circle of friends.
---Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, at the Methodist Church in Brooks, in the presence of a large concourse of friends and neighbors who came to pay their last tribute of respect to one whom they highly esteemed. Rev. Arthur Olsen, pastor of the Methodist Church in Grant City, officiated, assisted by Rev. Mr. Jackson, pastor of the M.E. Church in Brooks. Interment was made in the Baldwin Cemetery, where she was tenderly laid to rest beside her husband.
