CUMBERLAND — Robert Eugene Giles Jr., 75, of Cumberland, died Friday, June 5, 2009, at Braddock Hospital after an extended illness.

Born June 9, 1933, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Robert Eugene Giles Sr. and Genevieve M. (McGraw) Giles. Mr. Giles was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Robert Boyd Hout.

A United States Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, Bob started with the City of Cumberland Police Department on Jan. 7, 1962, as a patrolman. After numerous promotions and an outstanding career with the Cumberland Police Department he was appointed Chief of Police in July 1981 and after 10 years of dedicated service as chief he retired July 1, 1991. He was a member of the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 90.

Bob is survived by his wife of 24 years, Judith R. Giles; two sons, Michael Giles and wife Tara, Morgantown, W.Va., and Donald Giles and wife Lisa, Camp Hill, Pa.; two daughters, Brenda Lorenzen and husband John, Holland, Ohio, and Susan Keyser and husband Bob, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepson, Kraig Powers and wife Sarecia, Cumberland; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; a brother, William "Bud" Giles and his wife Mona, Ridgeley, W.Va.; and his sister, Judy Hout, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Janice David and husband Dr. Jeffrey David, Butler, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Tom Landaker officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by both the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard and the City of Cumberland Police Department Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be members of Cumberland Police Department and honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Mountainside Marine Corps League Detachment.
