Anna worked in a spining mill in New Hampshire, was a midwife, and worked for the railroad, probably as a cook. She was present when the golden spike was driven linking the railroads from the East and West. As she got older, she reminisced often about her experiences. Anna lived near the railroad tracks in Wells, Minnesota; and the family walked the tracks to church.
Anna wore a white ribon which had on it the letters WCTU. She was a charter member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Anna would wear her shoes on the opposite feet to make them last longer. In those days the shoes were made a size or two larger, making it possible to switch shoes between feet. She was a very Frugal person.
