Son Gerald Whelan was born 25 Dec 1906. He left for the Seminary at age 13 and was ordained in 1932. He taught Latin and Greek in high school, was a missionary priest, and served as a Chaplain during World War II. He was shipwrecked and miraculously rescued after 7 hours in a crowded lifeboat in the North Atlantic.
Gerald served 3 addition years as a Major in Iceland. After leaving the service, he became Rector of the First Redemptionist Church in Rochester, New York; then President of St. Mary's College. Lastly, he served as pastor of Our Lady of the Mount, a one priest parish on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Gerald died 24 March 1985 and is buried in Old Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, with other priests.
