Gerald Whelan was the son of Patrick and Mabel Hunt Whelan. Patrick and Mabel were married in 1898 in St. Cecilia's Church, Back Bay, where Patrick had served as an altar boy. He was 21; she was 19 when they were married.
Patrick's sister, Margaret, made Mabel's wedding dress. His sister Elizabeth was a bridesmaid.

He taught Latin and Greek in high school, was a missionary priest, and served as a Chaplain during World War II. He was shipwrecked and miraculously rescued after 7 hours in a crowded lifeboat in the North Atlantic.
Gerald served 3 addition years as a Major in Iceland. After leaving the service, he became Rector of the First Redemptionist Church in Rochester, New York; then President of St. Mary's College. Lastly, he served as pastor of Our Lady of the Mount, a one priest parish on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Gerald died 24 March 1985 and is buried in Old Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, with other priests.
