Lt. Russell was a staff officer to Col. John S. Mosby (The Gray Ghost). Russell commanded Company C, of the 43rd Virginia Battalion. He earned the reputation of being a fearless and daring assistant to Col. Mosby. I have included a few of Ranger Russell's fellow Rangers in this group. John S. Mosby, "The Gray Ghost" on the left-----Lt. John S. Russell, on the right. Lt. Russell was about 8 years younger than Col. Mosby, Lt. Russell lived 16 years after the passing of Col. Mosby in 1916.

Russell was an alias used by John S. Burton during the war to hide his true identity. the boys grew up together & were always close friends.
