William "Bill" A. Huerkamp, 82, of Caledonia died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Caledonia Care and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Utica, Minn., on Feb. 25, 1927, to Nicholas and Doris (Richardson) Huerkamp. On Feb. 1, 1951, he married Virginia Oldenburg in La Crescent.

He had served overseas in Italy in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working on the Money Creek Buffalo Ranch in rural Houston, gardening, especially tending to his tomatoes and potatoes, and Schwan's ice cream. He also loved spending time spoiling his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Patricia (Len) Soller of Kewaskum, Wis., Theresa (Dan) Schwarz of Seaside, Ore., William G. (Marcia) Huerkamp of Canton, Diane (Gary) Evenson of Bethel, Minn., Daniel (Mary) Huerkamp of Somersworth, N.H., Carla (Charley) Hahn of Houston, and Shari (Don) Hanson of Harmony; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, James (Zeta) Huerkamp of Dresbach, Minn., John (Nancy) Huerkamp of Onalaska, Wis., and Hank (Nancy) Huerkamp of Arkadelphia, Ark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Jones.

A Mass of Christian Burial was May 29 at Crucifixion Catholic Church in La Crescent with the Rev. Gregory Havel officiating. Burial, with military honors, followed in Crucifixion Catholic Cemetery.

Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent assisted the family with arrangements.
