Matilda Ann Cummins, the subject of this sketch, was born in the vicinity of Fort Recovery on Feb. 22, 1840. She spent the time of her childhood and young womanhood in or near the place of her birth.
She was united in marriage with James F. Vantrees, Feb. 2, 1860. To this union three children were born, Rosetta, Daniel E., and Maggie M. Her husband, her daughter Maggie and her son Daniel preceded her to the Great Beyond.
At the age of 11 years she became a follower of Christ and affiliated with the Christian church in Fort Recovery.
Mrs. Vantrees was a woman who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all with whom she came in contact. She was a good neighbor and a real Christian. Mrs. Vantrees suffered for a long time but under the most excruciating pain she exercised wonderful patience and by her trust and reliance in her God she inspired others to bear up under their afflictions. She being dead yet speaketh.
Mrs. Vantrees died on July 15, 1924 aged 84 years, 4 months and 16 days. She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter, Mrs. Rosetta Chamberlain, with whom she has lived for 9 years; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and many others relatives.
Only a moment of dark,
A dream of the fleeting night,
And then the beautiful break of day,
And the quiet peace of night;
And you found yourself where you longed to stand,
In the quiet repose of the Fatherland.
Services were held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thos. Chamberlain Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. G. Glair. Interment in Greenmound Cemetery.
