JULIA M. ETHERTON
Julia Mitchell Etherton, 88, of 612 W Elm St., Carbondale, recently of Jackson County Nursing Home in Murphysboro, died at 11:01 p.m. Saturday, Aug 26, 1978, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
A Carbondale historian, Mrs Etherton had written a number of articles and gave many lectures on the history of the area. Her father was the first banker in Herrin and later organized the First National Bank of Carbondale, her husband for many years was the president of the Carbondale National Bank.
Mrs Etherton was a member of the PEO Chapter JN in Carbondale at the Carbondale Women's Club. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Carbondale.
She was born March 21, 1890 in Herrin to Edward Everett and Anna Harrison Mitchell. She married James Everett Etherton Oct 21, 1918 in Carbondale.
Survivors include her husband, one son, William C of Carbondale, president of the Carbondale National Bank; one daughter Annabel Bergman of Wheaton; five grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m Tuesday, Aug 29, 1978, at the Huffman Funeral Home in Carbondale. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
