Elsie was the daughter of Charlie Roberson Hearn and Lu Hettie Gardner Hearn, the second of four children. She caught a cold when she was about two years old, woke up in the night not feeling well and crawled into bed with her older brother, who was then four years old. She died in her sleep that night, probably from pneumonia.
