Nora Helen Allen-Monroe died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Holton Community Hospital.
She was born June 2, 1911, at the farm home of her parents, W. H. "Major" Capsey and Ella Marie Forest Cook, near Soldier.
She attended Mount Union Country School and graduated from Soldier High School in 1928. She attended Kansas State University, Emporia State Teacher's College and the University of Colorado in Boulder.
She taught school at Anderson School in Jackson County and at Lone Pine School in Nemaha County.
She was married to Elton Raymond "Skall" Allen on Jan. 14, 1932, in Soldier, Nora Helen and Skall helped establish the Rustler's 4-H Club in Nemaha County and were 4-H leaders for 50 years. They started the 4-H exhibits in Wetmore and were superintendents of the 4-H division for many years. Nora Helen was first Grand Marshall in the 4-H parade held during the fair at Seneca in 1979.
Nora Helen taught Sunday school and served as an officer for the United Methodist Women at Soldier United Methodist Church. She also served on the administrative church board. She was active in the Extension Council for many years and served as county chairman of the council. She was a community person and took part in all the activities of her sons and her husband. She was a member of the So & So Club, Homemakers Unit, Soldier and Goff bridge clubs, and Goff Women's Club. She served on the school boards at Mount Union Country School and Soldier High School. Nora Helen received many awards. She received a silver spoon award for her cookie recipe. She baked and decorated cakes, raised dogs and sold puppies.
Elton had two sons, Raymond and Donald, from a previous marriage. She raised these boys as her own. Elton and Nora Helen had three sons, Boyd, Harvey and Martin. When her mother died, she assumed the role of mother for her six sisters and her brother. Nora Helen and Skall celebrated more than 50 years of marriage together. He died Dec. 9, 1983.
On Nov. 8, 1987, Nora Helen married George Monroe. They moved to Grand Island, Neb., where they belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church. She served as president of UMW and held offices in her circle and other groups she attended. She belonged to the Women's Club, Colonial Club, Stitch and Stir Extension Club, Parliamentary Unit, Church Women United, Bible Study groups and bridge clubs. She was honored as outstanding lay person in the south-central district at a conference in 1994. George died on Sept., 14, 2002.
