Services were Oct. 9, 1999 for Robert Ray Bagenstos, 72, of Holstein at United Methodist Church in Holstein. The Rev. Judith A. Piper officiated with burial in Holstein Cemetery under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Holstein. Mr. Bagenstos died Oct. 6 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.

Mr. Bagenstos was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Cherokee County, the son of Ray and Katie (Schubert) Bagenstos. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Holstein High School in 1944.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II. He was discharged in 1946.

He married Joanne Louise Hansen March 28, 1948, in Holstein. In 1946, he took over the Food Locker Storage from his father and also started Western Corner in the locker. He sold the business to John Tiefenthaler in 1991 and continued to work part-time until retiring in 1996.

After his wife's death, he married Connie (Havighurst) Roemer Sept. 4, 1988, in Holstein.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Holstein Community Club, Kiwanis, Holstein Lucky Riders and Northwest Iowa Quarter Horse Assoc. He was a volunteer with the Holstein Fire Department and served as a past president of Iowa Meat Processors Association.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Thad and Deb Bagenstos of Holstein; a daughter and her husband, Mary Jo and Doug Ruffridge of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren, Wade, Brooke and Abbie Bagenstos; a sister and her husband, Betty and Henry Witt of Webster City; a brother, Richard Bagenstos of Philadelphia, Pa.; three stepsons and their wives, William and Deborah Roemer, Jim and Jean Roemer and John and Mindi Roemer; two stepdaughters, Janet Roemer and Nancy Roemer; and seven step grandchildren.
