U.S. Congressman. Graduating from the Yale Law School in 1856, he was admitted to the bar that same year and commenced the practice of in New York City. He was a member and treasurer of the Democratic New York State Central Committee, (1877-79). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh, Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses and served until his death from typhoid fever at age 51.
