U.S. Congressman. He was in the in mercantile business, while he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in New York City. He was president of the Brooklyn Board of Aldermen, (1840-43, 45-48), a member of the New York State Senate, (1846-49) and trustee of the New York Life Insurance Company, (1848-49). In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851. After his term, he was appointed by President Fillmore as naval officer of customs of the Port of New York, serving (1851-53). He then resumed his position as and trustee of the New York Life Insurance Company, until his death at age 54.
