Herbert L. Sherer, 68, of What Cheer died Thursday, Aug. 30 2007 at his home. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Pastor Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery. Military honors will be preformed by the James Murphy American Legion Post #319.Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 at the Harden Funeral Chapel, What Cheer, with the family present from 6 – 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made in the family's name or to the What Cheer Fire and Rescue.
Herbert was born May 18, 1939 in Worth County MO., the son of Richard and Retha Weigart Sherer. Herbert was a 1957 graduate of North Harrison High School in Grant City, MO. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, March 13, 1958, where he served as a Radar Operator in Okinawa, Japan. After Herbert was honorably discharged in 1962, he married Diane Valentine. He began his 43 year long career as a miner with the Martin Marietta Company, retiring in Oct. 2005. Herbert was united in marriage to Bonnie Rutherford Dec. 6, 1978, at the Baptist Church in What Cheer, IA. He enjoyed fishing, metal fabrication and all types of tinkering, including working on his 1929 Model A Ford. Above all Herbert enjoyed his family, especially watching his "Curtain Climbers" as they grew. Herbert's family includes his wife, Bonnie of What Cheer; four sons: Brian (Debra) Sherer of Louisville, NE; Bret (Shelly) Sherer of Spring Hill, IA; Brandon (Jeanine) of Raleigh, NC; and Charles (Tamy) Hartwig of Brooklyn, IA; three daughters: Sara (Brett) Boorman of Sigourney; Mary Hartwig of What Cheer; and Emily (fiancée, Jared) Hartwig of Milton, IA; nineteen grand children; six great grand children; and two sisters: Betty Richardson of Eagleville, MO and Doris Eivins of Blythedale, MO. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents.
