Dewalt was raised in the German Reformed Church. In 1777, he joined in the defense of Philadelphia in the American Revolutionary War & served another 3-4 years. He married Christina A. Wolf in 1782, and in 1800, they moved to Ohio with their 11th of 13 children (11 sons, 2 daughters) born on the way. Raised in the German Reformed Church, he joined the United Brethren in Christ. It is said that "he was an educated man & taught his children in the German tongue. He was a farmer, teacher and a skilled worker in metals including blacksmithing." He & 2 sons cleared a quarter-acre with a spring & erected a cabin. Is said that "he was a sturdy, pious, intelligent & honorable man, a true father of religiously minded, patriotic sons & daughters . . .he loved to sing, was a great woodsman, honest & frugal." Six of Dewalt & Christina's sons were ordained in the United Brethren Church of Christ.


They had thirteen offspring:

(1.) Rev. Daniel Bonebrake married (first) Elizabeth Mills after her death (second) marriage Margery Harlan.

(2.) Jacob Bonebrake, married Mary Mandela Null.

(3.) Henry Dewalt Bonebrake married Martha Maggie Wolfe.

(4.) Adam Bonebrake married (first) Barbara Miller after her death married (second) Elizabeth Drolling.

(5.) Peter Bonebrake.

(6.) Rev. Frederick Bonebrake married Margaret Hawk.

(7.) Rev. Conrad Bonebrake, married Lydia Conn.

(8.) Johann Adam Bonebrake, (died young).

(9.) George Bonebrake, (died young).

(10.) Catherine Bonebrake married Henry H. Snively.

(11.) Elizabeth Bonebrake, married Peter Zehring.

(12.) David L.W. Bonebrake married Catharine Conn.
