Captain E. M. Allen died at midnight tonight
following a short illness. Death was probably due to apoplexy.
Captain Allen, who was vice president of the Maynard-Allen State bank, was at the bank all day as usual, but was taken ill shortly after he returned to his home following the closing of the bank. He grew gradually worse and sank into
death as the clock struck 12.
Captain Allen's wife is ill in Chicago where she went two weeks ago for treatment.
Captain Allen was one of the best known men in Michigan, having for years taken a prominent part in politics and in G.A.R. and Masonic circles.
He was 69 years of age and had been a resident of Portland for nearly 40 years, having come to Ionia county soon after the war. He went to the front as a lieutenant in a New York regiment and returned home with the rank of captain, having gained the promotion for bravery on the field of battle.
Though Captain Allen had been treasurer of Ionia county and had held several places of honor at the hands of the various Republican governors of the state he never sought office.
He was known far and wide for his oratory and it was he that presented the name of Aaron W. Bliss to the state convention which nominated him for governor.
He was a past grand commander of the Grand Army of Michigan and was also a member of the Ionia commandery Knights Templar.
During his entire residence in Portland he has taken an active interest in everything of public advancement and was a power for good in the community.

Besides the widow, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. [Doctor Robert B.] Bell of this village.

When the surviving past grand commanders of the G.A.R. of Michigan met in their annual banquet at Muskegon a few nights ago, Captain Allen, not feeling well, was kept at home by the storm, but at 10 o'clock he called up his comrades in the Muskegon home as they rose from the banquet table and drank a toast to the Grand Army of the Republic he joined in the toast at his Portland home.

Capt. Allen was exceptionally well and favorably known in Lake Odessa, having many close and warm friends here, especially among the G.A.R. He has given several addresses here and always to the delight of good audiences.
