AUNT CAD WALLACE, 97, DIES

Funeral services were conducted at Mills Chapel Saturday for Mrs. Matilda Caroline Wallace, a resident of this area for 95 years. The Rev. D. Hugh Peniston officiated at the services and the Rebekah lodge conducted ritualistic work at the chapel. Vault interment was in Walker Cemetery.

Mrs. Wallace, or "Aunt Cad" as she was known by many, died April 1 at Cottage Grove hospital, following a fall from a chair which fractured both legs the previous day. She was 97 years of age.

BORN IN ILLINOIS
A daughter of Thomas and Margaret Sawyer Allen, she was born in New Douglas, Madison county, Ill., August 29, 1861. The family came to Cloverdale over the Oregon trail in a wagon when she was two years of age. The first meal in Lane county was eaten near the spot where the present Osburn hotel now stands.

The family lived at Creswell, Walker and Cero Gordo. Her father at one time owned land which included a part of the present site of Walker church. She recalled hauling wood there long before the church was built. Her mother was the third white peron to be buried in the cemetery near the church.

When the railroad was built "Aunt Cad" saw the first engine that came in.

MARRIED AT WALKER
In 1880 she was married at Walker to John Calvin Wallace, who preceded her in death in 1936. The Rev. B. N. Walden, for whom Walden district was named, performed the wedding ceremony.

She reared a brother, Minor, as their mother died the day he was born, in addition to her own son, Frank. Ermine Young, whose mother also had died, lived with the Wallaces for a number of years.

In her 80's she was an active president of Cottage Grove Mothers club. When the surrounding granges joined with them to form the community center she was chosen president. She also was a member of the Presbyterian church and Rebekah Lodge.

BROKE HIP
At the age of 92 Mrs. Wallace fell and broke her hip which required hospitalization. Most of the time since then she has been a resident of Twilight Acres Rest Home.

Survivors include a son, Frank of Yakima, Wash.; two brothers, Minor Allen of Spokane, Wash., and John Allen of Portland; a granddaughter, Betty Galbraith; three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
