Hemsley, Angie Mae (Age 84) of Waldorf, Maryland

Angie Mae Hemsley, our beloved mother and grandmother, has proven to be that virtuous woman. She was always loving and supportive. Even through the problems and the struggle of life, she kept going, leaning on the name of Jesus for comfort. Because she was so very caring, she measured out her kindness, her time, and her love to her children and those who needed her with grace and dignity.

On Friday, June 19, 2009, our beloved mother, Angie Mae Hemsley, quietly and peacefully slipped away after a long illness at the Charles County Nursing Rehabilitation Center - Family of Care in La Plata, MD and entered into eternal rest to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Angie Mae Hemsley was born on November 16, 1924, to the late Charlie Loretz and Angie Loretz in Maiden, North Carolina. She was one of twelve children. She received her education in Maiden, North Carolina and confessed Christ at an early age attending church in North Carolina.

Angie Mae Hemsley then moved her residence to New York City and later relocated to the Washington, D.C. area and was employed at Maryland University. She was also employed with D.C. General Hospital and then later became a foster grandparent caring for babies at the Hospital for Sick Children until her health begin to fail. She received an award for 20 years of service for her dedication and the love, patience and wisdom for the foster grandparent program.

Angie Mae Hemsley was a long time member of Unity Baptist Church and was a faithful and active member of the Senior Choir and was a member of the Missionary Board.

Angie Mae Hemsley truly gave of herself entirely. She was affectionately called "Mama", "Grandma" and "Aunt Angie". She was a mother to many, always lending a helping hand and she loved to cook. She devoted and cared for Verlin (Paul), her son, who developed cerebral palsy at an early age.

Angie Mae Hemsley loved to travel with her family, friends and church members, and she worked diligently with the community outreach at the Petersburg Apartment for Seniors where she lived for many years. She often provided a gospel concert for the seniors and for several years her daughter, Brenda, who sang with the Gospel Traveleers of Shiloh Community United Methodist Church in Newburg, MD provided the music. They enjoyed singing for the seniors and eating a delicious home cook meal from Ms. Angie.

Angie Mae Hemsley leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Brenda Thomas, two sons, Vernon and Verlin, one daughter-in-law, Irene, four stepdaughters, Doris Hemsley, Delores Johnson, Beverly Bordeaux (Abraham) and Connie Brown (Joshua). Six grandchildren, David Thomas (Cheryl), Beatrice Johnson (Wayne), Vernon, Jr., Greg and two devoted grandchildren Janice Williams (Kenneth) and DeAngelo Hemsley (Damika), and six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
