James Calloway Ball was born in Brushy
Mountain, Wilkes County North Carolina. He was 1 of 11 children born to John Wesley Ball 1817-1900 and Ary Melvina Stanley 1816-1906

He enlisted in the Civil war on the side of the South as a Private on 6 Sep 1861 at age 19 In Wilkes County, North Carolina.
He served in Company C, of the North Carolina 26th Infantry Regiment

He married Asineth "Cinnie" Marlow Dec 15, 1865 in Wilkes, North Carolina. They had 11 children. They joined the LDS Church and moved their family west. She died of typhoid fever in 1887 and is buried in Manassa, Colorado.

He moved to Kaysville, Utah in 1888.

He returned to North Carolina and married Sarah Emeline Moore on Mar 4, 1891 Wilkes County. They moved West in about 1892 to Utah and then settled in Marsh Valley, Idaho in about 1894.

They had 4 children:
Viola Mae Ball Hoppe 1891-1975 born in North Carolina
C. Frank Ball 1893-1894 born in Utah
Willard Jones Ball 1895–1986 born in Idaho
Lucy Ball 1897-1899 born in Idaho

They moved to Blackfoot, Idaho in about 1901. Sarah died and is buried there. His daughter Lodema helped care for Viola and Willard until they were adults.

James Calloway later moved to Ammon, Idaho where he was cared for by his children. He died in 1933.

Nearly all of his family eventually lived and died in Idaho.
